Bindya Lulla always knew she wanted a career in the fashion industry. When it came time to choose a college the choice was clear, the Fashion Institute of Technology. Once there Bindya earned a degree in Accessories Design.
Upon graduation, Bindya went to work for Mary McFadden Couture. The high end luxury line was about to launch their first accessories line. From Mary McFadden, Bindya took away the knowledge that superior quality was of the utmost importance to consumers.
The next step in Bindya’s career path was handbag company Kate Spade. Bindya began working for the fledging company and was immediately immersed in all facets of the business. As she watched the trendy start up blow up into the successful company it is today, Bindya realized this was something she wanted for herself.
In 1997, Bindya founded Bindya New York a small handbag company manufacturing in New York.

She started with just a desk and a phone line in her husband’s textile showroom, but before long her handbags were carried in nationwide stores such as Blooingdales and Neiman Marcus, as well as a variety of boutiques like Scoop.
During the height of the pashmina trend, knowing of her ties to the textile business in India, it was one of her smaller boutiques who approached her about importing the shawls. Bindya began designing shawls and handbags but as a working mother she was spreading herself too thin. Something had to give and Bindya sought the advice of many of her colleagues in the industry. They all said the same thing… shawls were not just a fleeting trend that should be ignored. Bindya decided to focus exclusively on shawls. This proved to be a wise decision because now over 10 years later the company is thriving, including the launch of a second line in the fall of 2008. The new line Lulla by Bindya targets customers with lower price points and has garnered rave reviews.
